Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro: The Complete Guide
The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful and most rewarding way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro — Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. Approaching from the west through Londorossi Gate, the route covers around 70 km, passing through lush rainforest, across the sweeping Shira Plateau, and past the iconic Lava Tower. It continues along the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu Camp and descending via the Mweka Route. Available in 7 or 8 days, it is best known for its gradual acclimatisation profile. The scenery across all five of Kilimanjaro’s ecological zones is outstanding, and the route has consistently high summit success rates. Crowds are low for the first several days until the route merges with the Machame Route near Lava Tower, making it feel remote and unhurried. For anyone serious about reaching Uhuru Peak and wanting to enjoy every day of the climb, the Lemosho Route is the one most experienced guides recommend above all others.

Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro: The Complete Guide
If you ask us which Kilimanjaro route we recommend, the answer is always the Lemosho. It offers the best combination of scenery, acclimatisation, and summit success on the mountain. Approaching from the west, it crosses the full width of the Shira Plateau. This gives your body more time to adjust to altitude than almost any other route.
It’s not the cheapest or shortest option — but it consistently delivers the highest summit rates on Kilimanjaro, up to 90%. For most climbers who want to give themselves a real chance of reaching Uhuru Peak and enjoy the journey getting there, it’s the right choice.

Why We Recommend the Lemosho Route
Kilimanjaro has several routes, each with its own character. The Lemosho stands out for three reasons:
- Excellent acclimatisation: The 8-day itinerary gains altitude gradually. The Lava Tower day — up to 4,630m, back down to sleep at 3,950m — is one of the most effective acclimatisation steps on the mountain.
- Outstanding scenery: Lemosho crosses all five of Kilimanjaro’s ecological zones, from rainforest to arctic summit. The Shira Plateau is one of the most beautiful stretches on any route.
- Lower crowds: Lemosho is significantly quieter than the Machame Route for the first three to four days, before the routes merge at Shira Camp. You’ll often feel like you have the mountain to yourself.

Lemosho Route — Difficulty Level
The Lemosho Route is rated moderate. It is not a beginner’s walk, but absolutely achievable for anyone who puts in the preparation. The route involves long days of uphill hiking, the Barranco Wall scramble, and a demanding summit night on steep scree.
The key is endurance. You don’t need technical climbing skills. You need to be comfortable walking four to eight hours a day, for several days in a row, at altitude. Our full Kilimanjaro Training Guide covers everything you need to prepare.
Lemosho Route — Best Time to Climb

The Lemosho Route can be climbed year-round. The best seasons are:
- January to March: Excellent weather, fewer crowds, lower prices. One of the best times to do Lemosho.
- June to October: The main dry season. Clear skies, good visibility, but busier and more expensive. Book well in advance.
- Avoid April and May: The long rains. Trails can be muddy, visibility is poor, and some lodges close.

Our Frequently Asked Questions — Lemosho Route
Yes. The Lemosho Route is one of the best choices for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers. The 8-day itinerary gives you the most acclimatisation time. You do not need previous altitude or mountaineering experience. You just need to prepare well physically. See our Kilimanjaro Training guide.
It looks scarier than it is. The Barranco Wall is a hands-and-feet scramble up a steep rocky face. You do not need ropes or any special equipment. You just use your hands for balance and grip in a few places. Most climbers find it exciting and fun. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to climb. There are no exposure points that would concern someone with a reasonable head for heights.
On the 8-day Lemosho itinerary with a professional operator, summit success rates typically range from 85% to 95%. This is among the highest of any Kilimanjaro route. The extended acclimatization profile is the main reason. The 7-day itinerary has slightly lower rates. We recommend the 8-day for the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
We strongly recommend the 8-day. The extra day is spent on the crucial Lava Tower acclimatization walk. This makes a measurable difference to how well your body adjusts. The 7-day is also a good option and significantly better than most other routes. If your budget and schedule allow, go for 8 days.
The cost of a Lemosho Route climb depends on how many days, the quality of accommodation, group size, and your operator. See our full Kilimanjaro Climb Cost guide for a detailed price breakdown, or contact us for a personalised quote.
